Loading commons from external server wiki.openstreetmap.org doesn't always load all commons hosted files[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Road_signs_in_the_Philippines - shows a lot of media and I can load all of that within a second and all the embedded media is shown without issues.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Road_signs_in_the_Philippines/sign_lookup_table - This page I created for OSM with the specific DPWH of the Republic of the Philippines ID's for the OSM project.. it links to the wikimedia commons yet for some reason - it doesn't load all the embedded media always. sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't and loading takes 20+ seconds

So is this a problem of the wiki page I created on OSM? Did I do something wrong? Is this because of the server of OSM, something wrong with the server? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrgenie (talk • contribs) 11:13, 23 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

content regarding Somalia: how much fiction is it?[edit]

The Ajuran Empire controlled half of Arabia, and all of Ethiopia in the late middle ages. Maybe...

I'd like to discuss the uploads by Boqortooyada Soojireenka Soomaaliya. I am certain that all those photographs are heavily doctored; the flags and seals are probably complete bollocks; and the maps are not much better. The map of the historical en:Ajuran Empire is wildly optimistic about the influence of their rulers.

I have seen so much fictional BS recently that my first reaction was to request wholesale deletion; but then I saw the stuff is in use! And I remembered my recently learned lesson that fake-history maps should not be deleted from Commons when they are needed for use in patriotic fake-history articles in the respective language versions. Can someone versed in Somali or the current politics of Somalia, or maybe both, clear this up? --Enyavar (talk) 22:30, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is it possible for me to fix it? If not, is it possible for you to please fix it? Thanks!

2. I'd also like to be an authorized user to edit the Polio page. How do I request that?

3. I'd like to split the page on the Eradication of infectious diseases into the following: Eradication of human infectious diseases Eradication of animal infectious diseases Is it possible to do that? If so, how do I do it? Thanks very much for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Riskwiki (talk • contribs) 18:55, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Riskwiki: Hello and welcome. As to your questions:
  1. Yes, you can edit the Wikipedia article Eradication of infectious diseases where the image is being used and modify the caption over there.
  2. The Polio page is being protected from editing by new users, so you will have to wait until your user account is at least 4 days old and you have made at least 10 edits at the English Wikipedia. Then your status will automatically be set to "autoconfirmed".
  3. Page splitting may be a controversial issue, so I think you should first discuss it on the article talk page. You may put the code {{Split}} on top of the article page and then open a new discussion at Talk:Eradication of infectious diseases.
Please note also that this is the help desk for Wikimedia Commons where we collect free media, so any questions about editing Wikipedia articles are better asked at the Teahouse. And last but not least, please sign your contributions to talk pages and forums like this by typing four tilde characters ~~~~. This will add your username and a timestamp for reference. Can I use this photo in Wikipedia?[edit]

I intend to use this photo: http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/apac/other/largeimage69040.html

Here is the source: http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/apac/other/019xzz000000630u00005000.html

I wish to use it in this article about a historic institution. The photo represents the old location of the institution The Bengal Club.

I would like like to know if the photo is in the public domain. If not, can I upload it on the basis of fair use?

Thank you. Anderson1970 (talk) 23:05, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that is old enough to be in the public domain. Remember that the commons, and several language wikis do not accept fair use media files. The English wiki does under their very strict policy. See w:WP:NFCC Ww2censor (talk) 23:16, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you * @Ww2censor: for answering my question. I had another question related to the same page. There is another photo of the club, taken in 1912, available here: https://canmore.org.uk/collection/1196774 But the website says that the image is copyrighted and says as follows:
Attribution: © Courtesy of HES (Indian Glass Plate Collection) Licence Type: Educational
You may: copy, display, store and make derivative works [eg documents] solely for licensed personal use at home or solely for licensed educational institution use by staff and students on a secure intranet.
Under these conditions: Display Attribution, No Commercial Use or Sale, No Public Distribution [eg by hand, email, web]
So can this image be uploaded to the article? If yes, will it qualify as public domain or fair use? Thank you.
Anderson1970 (talk) 06:17, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Probably not based on the Hirtle chart as there is no evidence it was published previously to being on a website. The collection attribution tells us nothing about the author or any previous publication. Normal anonymous unpublished works are copyright in the US for 120 years from creation, even though India for photos of this age the term is 50 years. The image must be free in both the US and country of origin. I believe this is the current position. Ww2censor (talk) 16:29, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

What is the difference between a city's skyline and cityscape? Usually there's a category "Cityscapes of XYZ", then a subcat "XYZ skylines". What's the difference between these two? Etoza (talk) 23:41, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Etoza: a skyline necessarily emphasizes the horizon line. So, for example, File:Seattle YMCA 01.jpg could be considered a "cityscape" (though it is not currently categorized as one), but it is certainly not a skyline. - Jmabel ! talk 00:56, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Questions on a Historically-Significant Bio[edit]

Hello,

I'm seeking some wiki expertise. I'm just creating my first ever wiki page. I was hired by a client to write a bio of a historically significant person. I've uploaded the text to the page and it is well referenced with published sources. I'm wondering about two things: 1. The client gave me a photo of the person in question (the person died in 2002). I can't seem to upload it due to supposed copyright issues. Can someone share what steps I need to take to include the photo (the photo is in possession of the family/client and it is not under copyright)? 2. Is there any way to "fast track" the page beyond adding tags?

Thank you, DavidGoldman99 DavidGoldman99 (talk) 17:36, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DavidGoldman99: Hi,
1. Be aware of potential conflict of interest. Please read en:WP:COI.
2. For all information regarding the article, you need to inquire in the Wikipedia project itself. On Commons, we are only concerned about multimedia files.
3. For the picture, we need the permission of the copyright holder, who is usually the photographer. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Regards, Yann (talk) 20:10, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@DavidGoldman99: It would be unusual (but not impossible) for a Canadian photo from the mid-20th century to be "not under copyright". As far as I can think, that would be the case only if the photographer died no later than 1970. Is that specifically something you know and can document, or is there some other reason the photo would not be copyrighted? - Jmabel ! talk 22:38, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
DavidGoldman99: For Canadian copyright you probably should carefully review Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Canada. Besides a conflict of interest, if you are being paid for your editing you MUST also disclose that fact per Paid-contribution disclosure.

Naming convention for Creator namespace[edit]

Hi, I am wanting to set up a {{Creator}} for Category:Edward Fielding (painter) but we also have Category:Edward Fielding. The normal naming convention is to set "Creator:(First name) (Second name)" such as "Creator:Edward Fielding." However, that is likely to cause confusion later without a disambiguator. Is there a guideline on prefered disambiguators? My first thoughts are to use either "Creator:Edward Fielding (painter)" or "Creator:Edward Fielding (1834-1892). From Hill To Shore (talk) 10:56, 28 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Creator:Edward Fielding (painter)" is fine for me. Redirects are always possible. Yann (talk) 11:02, 28 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Identifying an author for an illustration on a couple of pages in a PDF[edit]

I have found pages 5 and 8 of File:Journal of botany, British and foreign. (IA mobot31753002397732).pdf have been created by Category:Edward Fielding (painter) and I'd like to link his name. However, while the software allows us to preview each page of the PDF as a JPEG, I can't see any way to record details for individual pages. I am guessing that I will need to select the largest scale of the preview of each page, download it, reupload it as a new file with appropriate creator and licence details and then include a link back to the PDF. Is that the best way to do it? From Hill To Shore (talk) 11:07, 28 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@From Hill To Shore: Yes, that seems to be a good idea. I would download the whole pdf though and then make high-resolution snapshots of the images in question, so you don't need to upload the entire pages. Any decent PDF viewer should have this snapshot option and the resolution can usually be adjusted in the general settings of the viewer. De728631 (talk) 14:10, 28 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

uploading non free image[edit]

I want to upload a non-free logo to commons. I know which tag to use and what to write in "rationale" but I have no idea where to input the template for a non-free logo. First off, what do I select under "Now tell us why you are sure you have the right to publish this work:"? I've tried to paste the template under "Another reason not mentioned above" but when I press preview, a message for speedy deletion comes up, so I guess this isn't the right way. What should I do in order to state my rationale and upload a non-free logo thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theodore Christopher (talk • contribs) 00:14, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Theodore Christopher. If it's really "non-free" then you shouldn't upload it here (See COM:L). If you intend to use this logo in a particular article then it's better to upload it, under a fair-use rationale, direct to the Wikipedia where the article is. Note that not every Wikipedia accepts fair-use. Also, note that many logos don't fulfill the threshold of originality and, therefore, are not warranted for copyright protection. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 00:29, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I only intend to use it in a single article on English Wikipedia, so how do I do a direct upload? Theodore Christopher (talk) 01:14, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the logo might not even be complex enough (this is it: https://usa.afsglobal.org/cb/assets/imgs/CBYX-150px.png) but I didn't know how to judge it Theodore Christopher (talk) 01:16, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's right around the borderline for complexity. Just uploading on en-wiki is probably simplest.
You can upload at en:Special:Upload. - Jmabel ! talk 05:16, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding photos taken at a photo studio (the photo studio has stated that it has waived its copyright)[edit]

I have created a personal page on wikipedia. At that time, I received a photo from the person who was involved in the personal page, and uploaded it from wikipedia COMMONS. Later, a user pointed out that the photo in question violated the copyright, and it was deleted. When we checked the source of the photo with the person who provided it to us, he told us that the photo was taken at a photo studio before, and when we checked with the photo studio, they explained that they had waived the copyright when they paid for it. In this case, how can I upload the file without being pointed out for copyright infringement? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Noblecafe (talk • contribs) 04:00, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Noblecafe: If the photo studio has transferred copyright, then who now owns the copyright? (That is, who was the purchaser?) - Jmabel ! talk 05:18, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your question. The purchase was made by the person who is preparing the personal page on wikipedia. Therefore, the copyright is held by the subject himself. I have received the photos directly from the person himself, and as the creator of his personal wiki page, I am uploading them to wikipedia COMMONS on his behalf. Noblecafe (talk) 07:22, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    Pinging @Jmabel. Brianjd (talk) 11:50, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Noblecafe: Hi, and welcome. How may we confirm that with the photo studio? Please send details regarding the copyright transfer via VRT.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:50, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. I am currently contacting the photo studio and preparing a memorandum transferring the copyright. I will send that one to VRT. The memorandum will probably be in Japanese, is that okay? I will translate it into English if necessary. Noblecafe (talk) 02:28, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Noblecafe: You may use the interactive release generator atop COM:CONSENT/jp (or copy the text from that page into a word processor and configure the variables), print the release out, have an authorized representative of the studio sign the printed release, and email a scan of the signed release via permissions-ja@wikimedia.org with a digital copy of the text used. To be doubly sure, you may do the same in English with COM:CONSENT and permissions-commons@wikimedia.org.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:15, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It might suffice for the owner of the copyright simply to assert (to the VRT team) that they own the copyright, and it was part of their transaction with the studio (same process to contact the VRT team); that would be up to them to decide. But definitely the best thing, if possible, would be an email to the VRT team from the studio itself. - Jmabel ! talk 16:26, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice. Since the photo studio has difficulty communicating in English and via email, I will try to explain the process to VRT on their behalf. Noblecafe (talk) 02:31, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If the studio sents an email (=text) to VRT, the VRT volunteers can simply run the text through an online translation tool. Important that the mail is sent from an official email address of the studio (for example if the studio has its own internet domain). --C.Suthorn (talk) 15:59, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with auto-complete and searching[edit]

1. Auto-complete/suggestion of category names in the Upload Wizard and also the "Search Wikimedia Commons" box seems broken. In many cases, it has not been bringing up the category that I need. I will give one example: Category:Newport harbour, Isle of Wight. I start typing "Newport harb..." etc. in the "add categories" field of Upload Wizard, but "Newport harbour, Isle of Wight" does not come up (some other partial matches do). Exactly the same thing in the "Search Wikimedia Commons" box with "Category:Newport harb..." etc. However, in the "HotCat" entry field it does work. I start typing "Newport harb...", and up it comes in the list, "Newport harbour, Isle of Wight". AFAIK, this feature always used to work reliably, so something seems to have broken.

2. When I type "Category:Newport Harbour, Isle of Wight" (trivial capitalisation difference) into "Search Wikimedia Commons", it fails to find "Category:Newport harbour, Isle of Wight", just saying "We didn't find any results". Surely this is not how it is meant to work? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 20:33, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Modified or derivative photograhic images[edit]

Hello

This is probably quite a basic question but despite my spending time searching help and reading Commons:Derivative works I'm still unsure.

Would someone, preferably an administrator, please check whether I'm following the correct way of uploading an image I've altered based on a photograph on the Geograph website here: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4833300

My derived or modified image is here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Michaels_Primary_School,_Highgate.jpg

I downloaded the original photograph then used an image processor to crop and enhance. Using the upload wizard I put myself as the creator even though I'm not the original photographer. Is this correct or should I have selected the not my own work button?

There's not a copyright issue as the original photo is licensed under CC-BY-SA-2.0 which I've disclosed and given attribution to the photographer.

--Rupples (talk) 03:30, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Rupples: It would be much simpler to upload the original with the obvious licensing, then use the crop tool to create your own derivative version under a distinct filename.
I wouldn't say that doing a crop makes the image your "own work". It's still the photographer's work. At most, add "cropped by User:Rupples" or some such. - Jmabel ! talk 03:55, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Eodigimark: You say "we own the copyrights" but you aren't clear on who is "we".
  • Typically, in a situation like this, the easiest thing to do is to first place the image on a page or website that is obviously under control of you, the copyright holder, and indicate an appropriate free license there. I recommend
w:en:Creative Commons

attribution share alike

This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license.
You are free:
  • to share – to copy, distribute and transmit the work
  • to remix – to adapt the work
Under the following conditions:
  • attribution – You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
  • share alike – If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same or compatible license as the original.

, which is the most restrictive license that is compatible with Commons' required licensing. Then cite that as your source when you upload the photo.

  • If for some reason that is not possible, then use the approach outlined in COM:VRT. This will work, but it usually requires a few emails back and forth with the team that handle confidential correspondence, and they tend to be a bit backlogged, often by several weeks.

Screenshot of YouTube video[edit]

Hello, I have found a file called File:Janice Fitzgerald Media.png which I’ve found to have been taken from a YouTube video. The video has no information on being under a Creative Commons license, so is the screenshot copyrighted? The video is titled “December 1, 2021 COVID-19 Update” and is on the channel “GovNL”. Translated from Russian using Google translate: I did not delete the Akhmatov page and did not submit it to the KBU. Why ping me - I don't know. I can only say to the author of the article that the article deserved to be deleted, which is why it was deleted by KBU. But the details of the content of the article are unknown to me. And Wikimedia Commons has nothing to do with deleting the article. Huge request not to ping me again about the article neither on Wikimedia Commons nor on Wikipedia. 'Avedon' . Wrong image: Jongen verlaat ouderlijk huis, Het kind gaat op een ambacht[edit]

Hi,

I wanted to use an image for my presentation, and stumbled on a drawing of "Jongen verlaat het ouderlijk huis Het Kind gaat op een Ambacht" from creator Jan Luyken(1712). I think it has the wrong image, according to my literature and i am not allowed to change this and want to ask someone to check this request and change as necessary.

This is the website i found the CC image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jongen_verlaat_het_ouderlijk_huis_Het_Kind_gaat_op_een_Ambacht,_RP-P-1896-A-19368-2911.jpg

I think this is the original: http://hdl.handle.net/10934/RM0001.COLLECT.147720 Rijks museum, Amsterdam The Netherlands. Owner of the original

Anyone who could fact check my question and change as needed thank you. For I am not able to do this.

Kind regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 145.118.93.93 (talk • contribs) 11:07, 3 December 2021‎ (UTC)[reply]

Correct, this has been imported wrongly (ping @Mr.Nostalgic: as uploader).
The text snippet reads: "Deugden-praal ter intrede van Z.K.M. George 1, Koning v. Gr. Britanje & c. in London. 1 okt. 1714". It is a parade of some kind for His Royal Highness King George 1, King of Great Brittain, in London. Ciell (talk) 19:49, 3 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
L.S. If you follow the source, it clearly shows the same title as i have uploaded and it clearly is wrong. :) I have requested the Rijksmuseum to correct this and as soon as this is done i will change the title. Unless someone else wants do do it upfront. Thanks for noticing. Regards Mr.Nostalgic (talk) 09:59, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr.Nostalgic: I can easily change the title, but then the whole description with the image would be wrong? Was the right image from 1712 somewhere in your set, is it somewhere else on Commons already - maybe under a wrong title as well? Ciell (talk) 10:38, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ciel, i really don't know. I copied all available images 30.000+ including descriptions from their website to commons. If they respond to my question then we can quickly find out.
Regards Mr.Nostalgic (talk) 15:46, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Just to be clear: you requested the correction by the Rijksmuseum today? Ciell (talk) 15:55, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Releasing designs on Commons[edit]

If I make a design and upload a picture of it to Commons, may I release the design under a different license than the picture? For example, can I a release a picture of a design under the CC Share-Alike 4.0 license and the design itself under the CC Share-Alike 3.0 license? (As far as I know, the licenses are functionally identical.) JulieMinkai (talk) 15:32, 3 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Theoretically, yes. Ruslik (talk) 16:26, 3 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mark as prominent?[edit]

Hello. What does "Mark as prominent" do? Thanks! --Hulged (talk) 08:09, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Hulged As far as I can tell, it does exactly what it says: marks something as prominent. For an example of this, see my latest upload. It is a figure skating pair cropped to focus on one skater, but it also shows part of the other skater. So I have marked it as depicting both skaters, but only one of them prominently.
The real question is: What does "mark as prominent" do for claims other than "depicts"? I have not found any use for this. Brianjd (talk) 08:43, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Brianjd, thank you for the response. --Hulged (talk) 11:35, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

özgeçmiş[edit]

Ben yazar Berrin ERGÜÇ özgeçmişim wikimedia yayınlanması için ne yapmam gerekir'

Translated via Google: "I am the author Berrin ERGÜÇ, what should I do for my CV to be published on wikimedia?"
@Ergüç: Hello and welcome. First of all, this is not Wikipedia but Wikimedia Commons where we collect free media. As to Wikipedia, it is strongly discouraged to write your own biography at Wikipedia because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia where ideally only notable topics are presented, and you will have a conflict of interest writing about yourself. When your work as an author is notable though, that is when your books and writings have gained national or international attention, there will be a time when someone else will write an article about you. So, the recommended way in such cases is to wait. De728631 (talk) 14:32, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to add infoboxes when template doesn’t work[edit]

  • Convenience link: Category:Ecchi - Jmabel ! talk 03:23, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Dronebogus: fixed, if I understand you correctly. To use {{Wikidata Infobox}} without providing a Wikidata item ID, you have to first attach the category to a Wikidata item. - Jmabel ! talk 03:29, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • how do I do that? Dronebogus (talk) 03:36, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Dronebogus: I do it within Wikidata, though there may be some way to do it from within Commons. Add the Commons category to a Wikidata item as an interwiki link. If you look at Category:Ecchi (Q6223646) you can probably see. There's a little more to it (I'm not going to get deep into Wikidata here), but I think that suffices. - Jmabel ! talk 19:02, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Photos taken of a public mural[edit]

Hello,

I'm writing about images used on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oaxaca_en_la_historia_y_en_el_mito

This is a new page. I am a newbie to writing Wikipedia articles.

In the early stages of the pages development, a question was raised about whether as the initial developer I could use the images. I think that it was just one person who raised that question. Some 50 changes were made to the first draft by various people, the revised draft was approved by David notMD. The article went live and I thought that everything was under control.

Today I received a message from JopkeB and it seems that they have nominated all my images for deletion.

The images I used are from photographs I took of a 40 year old public mural o Oaxaca, Mexico.

Is there a process by which I can get a stamp of approval that will go on my images? Is that the issue? How do I do that?

A quick scan of other muralists in wikipedia reveals that photos of murals are used. It must be feasible to use my images. How do i go about getting the required permissions?

Hello Sandus06, the 4 images of yours are really good and thus, I recommend you to think again before this.
